027: Adulation & 028: Fugacious - Hades - A Little Praise Makes the World Go Round
Title: A Little Praise Makes the World Go Round
Fandom: Hades (Videogame)
Author:
elidelio
Rating: G
Word Count: 395
Characters/Pairings: Megaera/Zagreus
Summary: Zagreus has a thought about the gods, and Megaera humours him. Mostly.
“Do you think they ever get tired of it, up there in Olympus?” Zagreus asked in a quiet moment of contemplation.
“Of what?” Megaera humoured him.
“Of all that adulation, from the mortals, I mean—does it ever get old?”
“Hm.” She seemed to think about it before asking, “What brought this on?”
He shrugged, “I was just thinking; the shades in Elysium are pretty enthusiastic towards any contestant, but it seems that in life, mortals usually reserve their praise for the Olympic gods. Have you ever thought about what it would be like? If mortals viewed us the same way as them.”
“Zagreus, are you saying you want millions of mortals telling you how great you are at all hours of the day?” Megaera asked with a hint of laughter in her voice.
“I see how that sounds now.” He admitted, “But you know that’s not what I meant, Meg. Not entirely, at least.”
“I know.” This time, she really considered it, “Mortals are selfish, their praise is fugacious—the only reason they offer it to Olympus is because they want things from them, things they can’t get from us. As soon as it stops producing results, they’ll move on.”
“Are you saying you wouldn't soften your whip if a shade offered you a few bottles of ambrosia?” Zagreus teased.
Megaera gave him a dangerous smile, “I don’t know, you tell me, has that trick ever worked for you?”
“Fair enough,” He relented, “But don’t you sometimes wish people outside of the House acknowledged your hard work?”
“I don’t need anyone’s acknowledgement, it’s enough that I am satisfied with my work.”
“That’s commendable, Meg—and I really mean it.” He added, trying to get the genuineness of his comment across, “I wish I could say the same, but I have to admit that getting praise every once in a while does feel very nice.”
“Is this your way of saying you want me to praise you more, Zagreus?” She raised an eyebrow.
“No, wait—” He realised too late the pit he had landed himself in, “That’s not what—I wasn’t—”
Megaera laughed heartily at the prince’s flustered words, leaning closer to get a better look at his stumbling attempts to backpedal, and the initial topic of discussion was quickly forgotten about.
